Introducing Summer Star. This is a tree 14 years in the making. It comes from a cross which Billy Craft first created from two large Texas varieties with Maxine. It was impressive, but didn't outshine Red Champ, so no cigar. I took it and crossed it back to Maxine. The result is large green fruit on May 17 (date of photo) in Southwest Louisiana, 7 - 10 days later than Maxine. Harvest was May 27, Memorial Day. Trials are still ongoing, but it begins ripening when Maxine is finished. This could be a great addition of large quality fruit for the northern tier growers.

Not to forget our Southern Growers, we introduce Lil Deb. Its a large fancy red fruit coming in early. Pictured is the original Lil' Deb lurking in the shadows of the tree named for her. It comes from the same Mayhaw flat the original Maxine came from. Fire blight resistant like Maxine, with fruit as large or larger, it's an early, heavy producer with clusters of high quality berries. I keep looking for thorns, since its named Lil Deb, but its thornless.
